Inside the machines making AI real: A rare tour of data center alley

The sound hits first. A deafening, disorienting white noise fills the air, the product of industrial fans working overtime to cool rows of densely packed computer chips generating enough heat to power a small city. Stand inside one of these server halls and you're essentially trapped inside the guts of a giant machine, even the floor beneath your feet transparent to reveal the pipes and cooling infrastructure keeping everything from melting.

Digital Realty, one of the world's oldest data center operators, opened an innovation lab in Northern Virginia in September that offers something rare in the opaque AI infrastructure world: a window into how the technology is physically built. The facility, housed in what locals call "data center alley" in Ashburn, marks a shift in an industry that has historically kept its operations locked behind nondisclosure agreements and security checkpoints.

Inside the test lab, the machinery of artificial intelligence becomes tangible. At the center of one closet-sized rack sits a gold-colored Nvidia AI system, the finish intentional, not accidental. "Gold is associated with high value and performance," according to Nvidia. A single fully equipped rack runs about $1 million.

Getting access to these facilities has long been difficult. Some companies reject tour requests outright. Others demand legal agreements before letting visitors step foot inside the actual server halls. This opacity has become a flashpoint in the escalating backlash against data centers, particularly in communities confronting unprecedented demands on local electricity and water supplies.

Digital Reality's willingness to open its doors signals something important: companies can be transparent about their operations without compromising proprietary secrets. The tour revealed not exotic mysteries but rather the unglamorous reality of modern computing: endless racks, cables, cooling systems, and staggering amounts of power consumption.

The company is betting big on the region. Its Digital Dulles campus, situated near the airport, could eventually sprawl across 13 data centers with an investment exceeding $10 billion over the next decade. From the outside, the facilities resemble nothing more than massive windowless warehouses, their most notable features being the most controversial: visible electricity substations, industrial cooling equipment, and backup power systems.

Nearly 40 diesel generators line one of the campus buildings, though company officials stressed they operate only for backup and occasional testing, not regular use. The campus draws its primary power from Virginia's grid, which relies substantially on natural gas and nuclear power. Digital Reality plans to deploy cooling technology that prioritizes energy efficiency over water, meaning the campus will avoid the massive cooling towers that typically dominate the landscape of water-dependent data center operations.

The global expansion continues. Digital Realty is scouting locations for additional innovation labs in Singapore, São Paulo, and Johannesburg, extending the physical footprint of the AI boom beyond America's borders.

The disconnect between the invisible nature of AI and its decidedly physical infrastructure remains stark. Users interact with chatbots and image generators as if touching an ethereal cloud. The reality involves millions of tons of silicon, copper, concrete, and diesel fuel concentrated in industrial zones that are increasingly difficult to hide from neighboring communities asking hard questions about energy, water, and environmental impact.
