President Trump issued a blunt ultimatum Wednesday, declaring that the United States will demolish an Iranian bridge or power plant for each vessel Iran targets in the Strait of Hormuz, with strikes potentially reaching Tehran itself.
The threat arrived as Trump weighs competing paths forward: negotiating a ceasefire while simultaneously preparing for wider military confrontation. His stated condition for any ceasefire hinges on Iran halting attacks on commercial shipping and reopening the strategic waterway.
U.S. Central Command reports that Iran has struck more than 30 commercial vessels over the past three months, continuing assaults even after Washington and Tehran signed a ceasefire memorandum in June.
In a Truth Social post, Trump spelled out the retaliatory formula with stark language: "From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran."
The pledge represents a significant escalation beyond recent military actions. The U.S. has already struck bridges in southern Iran during the latest 11 days of fighting. Expanding that campaign to power infrastructure and, more dramatically, to targets near or within Tehran would signal a major shift in the scope and risk of the conflict.
Any strikes targeting the Iranian capital could provoke a substantially wider retaliatory response from Tehran, potentially drawing the region deeper into conflict.
