A service member was killed Saturday in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone. This death came after two military personnel were killed Friday in an Iranian attack on a Jordanian airbase, with a third reported missing in action. Since the conflict began, 17 US service members have been killed.
Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, issued a stark warning in response, threatening "unforgettable lessons" if American attacks continued.
Trump has indicated plans to escalate military pressure by targeting Iranian power stations and bridges, aiming to force Tehran to relinquish control over the strait of Hormuz. Last week the US reinstated a naval blockade on Iranian ports, with the military reporting it has since redirected six ships and disabled one.
The military tensions are already affecting global energy markets. Brent crude oil climbed 2.72 percent to $90.50 a barrel when Asian markets opened Monday.
The conflict traces back to February when the former Iranian supreme leader was killed in joint US-Israeli strikes. Trump has outlined multiple objectives for the military campaign, including preventing Iranian nuclear weapons development and triggering regime change. Energy Secretary Chris Wright suggested Sunday that the mission has shifted to securing oil shipments through Hormuz after the US-Iran ceasefire collapsed.
