Todd Howard, the longtime chief of Bethesda Game Studios, has posted on Reddit for the first time in six months, offering a rare glimpse into how the studio monitors fan feedback. The developer confirmed it is "constantly listening" to the gaming community on the platform, signaling a shift toward more direct communication with players.
Howard's post came on the heels of Bethesda's major roadmap announcement, which outlined the studio's priorities for the coming years. The Elder Scrolls 6 remains Bethesda's flagship project, with Fallout 5 now entering pre-production. The company also confirmed that Obsidian Entertainment, developer of Fallout: New Vegas, is working on a new Fallout title, while remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas are in active development. Starfield, despite speculation about its future, continues moving forward.
The timing of Howard's communication reflects Microsoft's broader gaming strategy under new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Recent layoffs across Xbox affected Bethesda and its subsidiaries as part of what Sharma has called a "reset" of the company's gaming division. The restructuring prioritizes established franchises, meaning Bethesda will accelerate output of Elder Scrolls and Fallout content.
In his Reddit post, Howard described himself as a "professional lurker" who harvests ideas from the platform regularly. "I know I don't really post, and we're usually very quiet," he wrote. "Today's info was an attempt at changing that and letting everyone know what we've been working on the past several years, and a look at what's coming. So know we're constantly listening and keep telling us how to be even better. You'd be surprised how many great ideas I get from Reddit."
This marks Howard's first substantive Reddit contribution in half a year. His previous post, six months earlier, was brief: a response thanking Reddit for never changing after seeing a user-created mod inserting Howard himself into Fallout 4. Before that, three years elapsed before another post thanking fans for their enthusiasm around Starfield. Howard's Reddit history reveals infrequent but strategic engagement. During a Skyrim 10th anniversary Ask Me Anything five years ago, he mentioned not posting online for 15 years prior.
Fan responses to Howard's message were swift and pointed. The most prominent request called for continued support of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which has not received a patch since July 2025. Users complained that the remade game, built on Unreal Engine 5 by developer Virtuos, suffers from performance degradation that worsens over extended play sessions. "Thanks Todd. Please get Virtuous to keep patching Oblivion and give it as much love as you guys gave Skyrim, because it feels abandoned right now which is a shame," one Redditor wrote.
Oblivion Remastered has performed strongly commercially for Bethesda, attracting over 9 million players since its release. Howard himself told IGN in December that the studio was "really, really pleased with how well it did." The apparent abandonment of the title post-launch stands in contrast to that success. The game's Nintendo Switch 2 launch, scheduled for August 11, 2026, may prompt a substantial update across all platforms, though Bethesda has not confirmed such plans.
Looking ahead, Bethesda is ramping up Fallout celebration. While a traditional Fallout Day broadcast won't occur this year, the company has announced a major live event in Washington, D.C. planned for 2027 to mark the franchise's 30th anniversary. Also in development is a large Fallout 76 expansion titled Raven Rock, which serves as a prequel to Fallout 3's events.
