Donald Trump made a dramatic entrance to the World Cup final on Sunday, arriving by Marine One helicopter before taking his seat alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the luxury box overlooking the stadium in New Jersey.
The presidential helicopter circled the venue roughly 45 minutes before kickoff, drawing little reaction from spectators below. Marine One touched down nearby moments later, and Trump was escorted to a glassed-in section on the west side of the stadium. He sat with Infantino and a constellation of international dignitaries, including Spain's King Felipe VI, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The crowd's mood shifted when Trump and Infantino took the field for the trophy presentation ceremony after Spain's victory. Boos erupted around the stadium as the two men appeared for the formal handover, a stark contrast to the muted response when Trump was briefly displayed on the video screens earlier in the match. A brief showing of the president during the national anthem had drawn only scattered boos from sections of the crowd.
This marks Trump's first World Cup match attendance since the tournament began this summer, making him the first sitting US president to attend a World Cup final on American soil. When the United States hosted the tournament in 1994, President Bill Clinton skipped the championship game, delegating the trophy presentation to Vice President Al Gore instead.
Trump has become a fixture at major sporting events since his recent political resurgence. In recent months, he has attended the Super Bowl, the US Open tennis tournament, the Daytona 500, the Ryder Cup golf championship, college football's national championship, and Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, where New York Knicks fans greeted him with vocal disapproval. He has also made appearances at club golf tournaments.
The FIFA president and the American leader have cultivated a working relationship. Trump previously called Infantino to intervene in a disciplinary matter involving US player Folarin Balogun, whose red card suspension was ultimately reversed before a last-16 match. The intervention drew criticism over the appearance of political pressure on the international governing body, though Balogun was cleared to play. The US team ultimately fell to Belgium in that round.
The trophy presentation at a World Cup final has varied in ceremony and rank over the years. At the 2022 final in Qatar, the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani joined Infantino to hand the trophy to Lionel Messi and Argentina. Four years earlier in Russia, Vladimir Putin awarded the cup to Kylien Mbappe's France team.
Trump's appearance at the New Jersey stadium was not his first high-profile moment there. He had previously attended the Club World Cup final at the same location last summer, where he presented the trophy to Chelsea and received loud boos from the crowd.
Author James Rodriguez: "Trump's celebrity gravitates toward major events, but the booing at the World Cup shows even a trophy ceremony can't entirely escape the polarization he carries into any room."
