Ryan Fox captured his maiden major title at the 154th Open Championship with a dramatic birdie putt on the 18th hole, becoming the first New Zealander to win the tournament since Bob Charles claimed it in 1963.
Fox carded a final round of 68 for a 10-under-par total, edging Cameron Young by one stroke. The victory capped a grueling week in which Fox appeared emotionally drained during the pivotal final moments.
Recounting the winning putt, Fox described a physical and mental state that bordered on numbness. "You can't feel your hands," he said, explaining the nervous energy that gripped him on the 18th tee. "My focus with the putter all day was, just take a really deep breath before I hit it and just try to hit a line and I did that on 18. I was shaking."
Fox told his caddie Dean before teeing off that they were going to try to win the championship. After two perfect shots set up the winning putt, reality became blurred. "My hands were all over the place," Fox recalled. "I was just trying to get it towards the hole somewhere. It's surreal that it went in."
The New Zealander's inward nine holes of 34 included crucial birdies in two of the final three holes. Through the middle of his round, Fox felt momentum building. "I said to my caddie through six or eight holes: 'I feel a lot better than I thought I would feel right now,'" he explained. "I played really solid early."
Fox's path to glory was unlikely. He had never finished in the top 10 of a major championship prior to this week and missed the cut at the Open just earlier this year.
The victory resonates deeply in his home country, where the achievement stands as a watershed moment. "I don't know whether I ever thought it was going to become a reality," Fox said of his lifelong dream. "Now it is and to have my name etched in the history of the game is pretty awesome. I think it's pretty awesome for New Zealand as well. It's going to be big down there."
Fox acknowledged the sacrifice his supporters made to follow the tournament across time zones. "I appreciate all the support from down there at home," he said. "It's going to be a lot of people pretty tired Monday morning at work after staying up all night to watch. I'm glad it was worthwhile for them."
