The Hum That Only Some Can Hear May Be Coming From Inside Your Own Ear

For decades, a peculiar phenomenon has baffled people across the globe: a low-frequency buzzing or humming sound that seems to materialize from nowhere. Now researchers believe they may have finally pinpointed where it originates, and the answer points not to distant machinery or hidden infrastructure, but to the inner workings of the human auditory system itself.

An estimated 2 to 4 percent of people worldwide report experiencing this unexplained sound. For some it remains a minor annoyance. For others, the deep vibrations trigger genuine physical discomfort or illness, creating a sensation that seems to pulse through the entire body.

The noise proves almost impossible to track down. It registers most clearly indoors, particularly late at night when ambient noise drops away. People will peer outside searching for a running engine or industrial equipment, only to find silence. Even stranger, someone standing in the same room often hears nothing at all.

The phenomenon first surfaced in Bristol, England during the mid-1970s, when the Bristol Evening Post fielded a flood of letters from residents desperate to identify the source. A warehouse with large industrial fans became the primary suspect, but the reports persisted even after the building shut down years later. Similar accounts soon emerged from other UK coastal towns like Plymouth and Southampton, and eventually the reports spread outward across the Atlantic and beyond, appearing in places as distant as Taos, New Mexico, Kokomo, Indiana, and eventually Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Canadian teacher Glen MacPherson heard The Hum while living on Canada's west coast. When he relocated elsewhere in the region, the sound vanished. His quest to understand the mystery led him to launch the World Hum Map and Database Project in 2012, an online platform that catalogues sightings and location data from thousands of affected people.

Theories about the source have ranged wildly. Industrial ventilation systems, heat pumps, road traffic, windmills, ocean waves, and wind across open landscapes all generate low-frequency noise and became early suspects. Wilder explanations involving government agencies and extraterrestrial sources also circulated online.

Markus Drexl, a professor at Norway's NTNU university, decided to approach the mystery with systematic laboratory testing. His team studied 28 people in Germany who reported hearing the mysterious hum, running a series of experiments to determine whether the sound came from external sources or from within.

First, the researchers checked whether these individuals possessed unusually sensitive hearing at low frequencies. The results contradicted expectations. Most participants showed no exceptional ability to detect low-frequency sounds. Only two demonstrated better-than-average hearing in certain frequency ranges.

Next, the team explored whether the inner ear itself might be generating the noise. The cochlea naturally produces faint sounds at various frequencies as a byproduct of how it amplifies incoming audio. Known as oto-acoustic emissions, these internal sounds can be measured with sensitive equipment placed in the ear canal. Some people can actually perceive these emissions, sometimes as distressing ringing sensations.

When Drexl's team tested whether the study participants produced these low-frequency oto-acoustic emissions, the answer came back negative.

The most likely explanation emerged from a different direction entirely: low-frequency tinnitus. Tinnitus occurs when the brain perceives sound even though no external source is producing it. People often initially misinterpret the sensation as coming from their surroundings. Only when the noise persists after changing locations does the realization dawn that something internal is generating the sound.

Based on the experimental results, Drexl concluded that The Hum likely stems from two separate causes. A tiny fraction of sufferers may genuinely possess unusually sensitive low-frequency hearing. For the vast majority, however, the experience appears to be a form of tinnitus originating within the auditory system itself.

The implications extend beyond solving a curiosity. Drexl notes that scientific understanding of how the ear processes low-frequency sound remains surprisingly limited. Most research has focused on higher frequencies, leaving gaps in knowledge about how the auditory system handles the lower ranges and infrasound below 20 hertz. As industrial noise in these frequency bands increases worldwide, that knowledge gap becomes more urgent to address.
