OpenAI has rolled out canvas, a new interface designed to transform how users collaborate with ChatGPT on writing and coding tasks. The feature opens a separate workspace within the chat window, letting users see their creations take shape in real time without constant back-and-forth scrolling.
Canvas automatically triggers when users ask ChatGPT to write essays, stories, code blocks, or other longer-form content. Instead of the text appearing inline with the conversation, it pops open in its own dedicated panel. This approach keeps the main chat history intact while giving users space to focus on the work itself.
The workspace includes a set of built-in tools meant to speed up iteration. Users can request changes directly in canvas, and ChatGPT adjusts the content on the fly. Quick action buttons let people copy code, download files, or export their writing in various formats without typing new commands.
Canvas also tracks the editing history of any document, allowing users to revert to earlier versions if needed. This version control layer adds a safety net for creative or technical work where multiple edits pile up fast.
