A single stroke of luck has forced Ubisoft to scrap its carefully planned community event for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. One player discovered this week's hidden treasure chest entirely by accident, hours before the publisher planned to release a public clue about its location.
The chest in question contained the Explorer Outfit, a rare cosmetic for protagonist Edward Kenway that fans believed had been cut from the remake. Finding it was no ordinary feat given the game's sprawling ocean, most of which remains unexplored by typical players during normal gameplay.
Reddit user -Holliday stumbled upon the discovery while on a seemingly routine naval contract. After dropping anchor in what appeared to be a random location, they noticed air bubbles rising from the water below. The dive that followed revealed the buried chest and its coveted contents.
"Finding it was honestly by pure chance," -Holliday explained in their post. "I glanced at my map after taking a naval contract and just how the area looked on the map peaked my interest enough to go check it out." They described the moment of opening the chest as genuinely shocking, immediately realizing they had stumbled upon something highly sought after by the community.
The player's memory of a previous community riddle event had planted the seed for their spontaneous ocean exploration strategy. Rather than methodically combing specific zones, -Holliday simply took occasional dives while sailing to nearby points of interest. That casual approach paid off dramatically.
Ubisoft took the early discovery in stride. On Twitter/X, the official Assassin's Creed account responded with humor and grace, praising the player's treasure-hunting prowess. "You guys are too good," the publisher wrote. "We were going to reveal a clue for this community chest on Friday but your treasure hunting skills are too great. Hats off!"
Rather than let the moment go to waste, Ubisoft immediately pivoted by releasing the chest's exact coordinates: 28 x 292. They also shared information about a second hidden reward consisting of a rapier and figurehead located at 500 x 168, giving other players a fair shot at claiming their own prizes.
Black Flag Resynced has earned considerable praise since launch. IGN's review gave the remake a 9/10 score, noting that it successfully elevated an already celebrated game to modern technical standards rather than simply recycling the original experience.
