Palworld Quietly Redesigns Controversial Pals Before 1.0 Launch

Pocketpair has overhauled the appearance of several creatures in Palworld's 1.0 release, silently shifting their designs away from the Pokémon likenesses that have dogged the game since its early access debut. The developer did not mention these alterations in its patch notes, leaving players to discover the changes on their own.

Four Pals received notable makeovers. Verdash traded its soccer-player silhouette for a more squirrel-like form. Robinquill lost the red cape that made it instantly recognizable to Pokémon fans. Fengallop morphed into a deer with recolored features. Grintale's face was redrawn to look less feline and more original.

The creatures had previously drawn comparisons to specific Pokémon: Cinderace, Decidueye, Cobalion, and Galarian Meowth respectively. Online reactions have been largely supportive of the revisions. On Reddit, players praised the updates for making the designs feel less derivative. "Can't believe that they actually went back and improved them to make them feel less kitbashy or repurposed," wrote one user. Another noted relief at the deer redesign, saying the original looked "too much like a femme fluffy Cobalion."

Not all commentary has been forgiving. On ResetEra, forum users characterized the original designs as blatant "model rips" and suggested the overhaul amounts to an admission of guilt. "It's hilarious how blatant some of the model rips were, and people still jumped to defend them," one moderator wrote.

The redesigns arrive as Palworld faces ongoing legal scrutiny from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. The companies filed a patent dispute in September, alleging gameplay similarities and seeking 5 million yen per violation, roughly $30,000, along with an injunction that would have blocked the game's release. A judgment is expected later this year. Pocketpair has already made changes to game mechanics believed to respond to that action.

The timing of the visual overhauls suggests the developer may be taking steps to distance itself from the infringement allegations, though Pocketpair did not comment on the redesigns.

Author Emily Chen: "Smart move burying these changes in the patch notes, but players were always going to notice. The real question is whether Nintendo thinks it's enough."
