Cyberpunk 2077 Surges Back to Life, and Players Are Demanding More

Cyberpunk 2077 is experiencing a unexpected resurgence. Steam concurrent player counts hit 100,000 in early July, the game's highest peak since 2023, driven by a recent sale, anticipation for the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime, and a crossover with Wuthering Waves.

The timing has reignited a persistent fan demand: CD Projekt should release another expansion. The studio has repeatedly shut down this idea. In May, CD Projekt declared it had "no plans" for further Cyberpunk 2077 DLC or expansions, a statement that disappointed players still hungry for content in Night City nearly five years after launch.

The frustration feels sharper given what's happening with The Witcher 3. CD Projekt recently announced new DLC for that 2015 game, which already has years of post-launch content behind it. For Cyberpunk 2077 fans, the contrast stings. One Reddit thread titled "Yeah, we are gonna need that second DLC CDPR!" accumulated 12,000 upvotes, capturing the collective frustration.

"It's a slap in the face The Witcher 3 is getting another DLC," one user wrote. "To any Witcher fans reading I don't hate the game for it but bro why is an 11-year old game with heaps of DLC still getting new shit and the newer title isn't?"

The game itself has only received one major expansion: Phantom Liberty, which launched in 2023 and starred Idris Elba. Despite that slim track record, Cyberpunk 2077 continues to attract players. CD Projekt reported in recent weeks that the game has sold 40 million copies since its December 2020 release, up 5 million from November 2025.

Paweł Sasko, an associate game director on the forthcoming Cyberpunk 2, acknowledged the player surge on social media: "Have fun my dears, hope it's going to keep you hooked, entertained, and inspired."

The company's long-term vision points elsewhere. Cyberpunk 2 is in development but positioned further back in the pipeline than The Witcher 4. CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski suggested Cyberpunk 2 won't arrive before 2030, leaving players who want to return to the setting facing a years-long drought.

Some fans speculate that CD Projekt may eventually relent on DLC, just as it did with The Witcher 3, which went years without post-launch content before suddenly getting new expansions. One player noted that The Witcher 3 had no DLC announced for years before the studio pivoted. Others grumbled about cut content and wished CD Projekt would recover and release those pieces as paid expansions.

The player comments ranged from humorous to earnest. "Honestly, they need some money so give us a dlc so we could give you more money!" one joked. Another offered a more wistful take: "I'm just wrapping up my first playthrough. 100%ing it at around 220 hours. It's incredible. A new DLC would wreck my plans to move onto my backlog, but I'd take it in a second lol."

Author Emily Chen: "CD Projekt's refusal to greenlight new Cyberpunk 2077 DLC while pushing another Witcher 3 expansion is tone-deaf, especially with the game hitting its best player numbers in years."
