Spike Chunsoft has postponed Danganronpa 2x2 from its originally scheduled 2026 window to early 2027, the studio announced through producer Shohei Sakakibara. No specific reason was given for the delay, though the company framed the decision as necessary to deliver a polished final product.
"While development has been progressing toward a 2026 release, we have decided to move the launch to early 2027," Sakakibara said in a statement. "We will share a more specific release date at a later time." The studio pledged to reveal additional details as work continues.
To offset disappointment over the postponement, Spike Chunsoft revealed a new feature called Slayhem Mode, which will be available from the game's start. This mode will retell the Danganronpa 2 story with an entirely new plot, complete with different murder victims, culprits, and tricks. The alternate storyline will contain roughly 20 percent more content than the game's standard mode.
The remaster has also undergone visual overhauls. The side-scrolling map structure has been replaced with a 3D world map, and character portraits have received updated artwork. Screenshots of the in-development build show these changes in action.
Danganronpa 2x2 is a full remake of 2012's Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, the mystery visual novel that became a franchise cornerstone. Fans got their first look at the project during last year's Nintendo Direct. The game is planned for PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Author Emily Chen: "A year-plus delay stings, but Slayhem Mode's promise of a completely reimagined story with more content suggests Spike Chunsoft is rethinking what a remaster can be rather than just sprucing up the original."
