Sony Drops Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on PlayStation Plus This Month

PlayStation Plus subscribers are getting a combat boost in July. Sony announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will headline the monthly games lineup starting July 7, joining two other titles through August 3.

The 2023 shooter proved divisive with players and critics upon release. Its single-player campaign drew particular fire, with IGN awarding it a 4 out of 10 and describing the offering as "underbaked, rehashed, and cobbled together from multiplayer parts." Despite the rough critical reception, the inclusion carries real timing value: Modern Warfare 3 gives subscribers a chance to run through the story before Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23.

Activision had pushed aggressive annual release cycles for the franchise, but the publisher has signaled a shift away from that strategy going forward. The 2023 Modern Warfare arrived just a year after 2022's Modern Warfare 2, marking the tail end of that publishing approach.

Two other games complete July's slate. For the King 2, the tactical RPG sequel that debuted on PC in 2023, brings roguelite elements and procedurally generated maps to the subscription service. The game drew mixed reviews, including a 6 out of 10 from IGN, but found enough of an audience to justify the port. Players navigate tactical combat inspired by tabletop gaming while hunting an evil queen.

Rounding out the three additions is CrossCode, a 16-bit-style 2D action JRPG that channels retro dungeon crawlers. The game blends classic adventure sensibilities with RPG loot mechanics and combat systems.

All three titles will be available on both PS5 and PS4 for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members starting July 7 and ending August 3.

Author Emily Chen: "Modern Warfare 3 was a slog that even critics couldn't get behind, so free access to it works perfectly for anyone curious about what the fuss was about before the franchise tries again this fall."
