Three members of an elite wildfire response crew died Saturday while battling the Knowles fire in western Colorado, federal officials announced Monday. Emily Barker, 38, of Michigan, Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Arizona, and Sydney Watson, 27, of Alabama were killed as they worked to contain the rapidly spreading blaze along the Utah-Colorado border.
The three were part of a Helitack crew, a specialized unit that responds to wildfires by being deployed via helicopter to remote areas inaccessible by ground transport. They attempted to shield themselves using tent-like emergency shelters but were overcome by the fire's intensity, according to reporting.
Two other crew members were injured in the incident but have not been publicly identified by authorities.
The Knowles fire has since merged with two adjacent fires to form what is now called the Snyder Mesa fire, which has consumed more than 28,000 acres across the region. The blaze reflects a broader crisis unfolding across the western United States, where thousands of firefighters are deployed this month as hot, dry conditions and strong winds fuel rapid fire growth across multiple states and Alaska.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a state of emergency Saturday in response to the dangerous fire conditions. Utah Governor Spencer Cox had issued a similar declaration the previous week and implemented a ban on personal fireworks through July Fourth.
In a statement Sunday, Governor Polis paid tribute to the fallen firefighters. "The men and women who serve on the front lines of these fires risk their lives to keep us safe and to protect the lands and communities we love," he said. "To the loved ones of those lost, and to their fellow crew members, some who are still battling the flames, know that the state of Colorado mourns alongside you."
The U.S. Department of Interior announced it had activated a serious accident investigation team to examine the circumstances that led to the deaths. Forest Service Deputy Chief Sarah Fisher released a statement acknowledging the loss across the wildland fire community. "Our heavy hearts are with the families during this unimaginable time," she said.
Messages of condolence came from state leaders including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Utah Governor Cox. The Department of Interior, in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management and Colorado National Guard, is continuing efforts to suppress the Snyder Mesa fire and recover the bodies of the three fallen firefighters.
Author James Rodriguez: "These deaths underscore the brutal reality of wildland firefighting in an era of larger, faster-moving fires that are outpacing the defensive equipment these crews carry."
