Lions cut rookie cornerback after arrest in kidnapping probe

The Detroit Lions released cornerback Terrion Arnold on Monday, days after his arrest in connection with allegations that he orchestrated the abduction and assault of three men in the Tampa area.

Arnold, a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft from Alabama, had appeared in games for the Lions last season with 31 tackles and an interception. The 23-year-old's release came the same day a Florida judge set his bail at $1 million.

Prosecutors allege that Arnold believed the three men had stolen luxury items and $100,000 in cash from him at an Airbnb rental. According to the charges, six associates of Arnold carried out the kidnappings and beatings three days after the theft was reported, while Arnold himself was not present at the location of the crimes.

The case hinges on prosecutors' argument that Arnold bears responsibility for orchestrating the violence. They contend he identified the suspected thieves to his associates and expressed a desire to confront them, thereby setting the abductions in motion. Two female co-defendants have already pleaded guilty and are cooperating with authorities, providing statements that connect Arnold to the alleged conspiracy despite his absence from the scene.

Arnold's legal team has moved aggressively to counter that narrative. His attorney, Harvey Steinberg, argued in court that prosecutors have failed to demonstrate Arnold knew what his associates would actually do or that he directed their actions. Arnold's representation from EAG Sports Management released a statement claiming the bail decision reflects how weak the evidence against him truly is.

None of Arnold's co-defendants received bail conditions set by the court. The state attorney's office vowed to pursue the case vigorously, with a spokesperson stating the office remains committed to securing justice for the victims.

The charges carry potential life sentences if convictions are secured.
