A newborn infant was discovered dead in a portable bathroom at Electric Forest, a major four-day dance music festival in Michigan, on Sunday. The body was found by a vendor employee conducting routine maintenance in the camping area.
Michigan state police identified the remains as a neonate, defined as an infant four weeks old or younger. Authorities have launched an investigation and are seeking public assistance.
Festival organizers released a statement expressing their distress over the discovery. "It causes us so much pain to have to share this difficult news with you," organizers wrote, describing themselves as "heartbroken" and calling on attendees to help authorities.
Police urged anyone in the area who observed unusual activity to contact them. Investigators also asked the public to refrain from speculation on social media, citing the sensitivity of the investigation and respect for those involved.
The discovery prompted organizers to shut down the festival hours earlier than scheduled on Sunday evening. Operations resumed into early Monday, with organizers citing severe weather as the reason for the temporary closure.
Electric Forest, held in western Michigan, is known for blending a Robin Hood-Sherwood Forest aesthetic with psychedelic and electronic music. The festival had otherwise proceeded without major incident prior to Sunday's discovery.
