Joe Biden took direct aim at Donald Trump on Sunday, declaring his successor has damaged America's global reputation more severely than any president in history. Speaking at a Democratic gala in Hanover, Maryland, Biden delivered a scathing 10-minute critique that went beyond typical political rhetoric to focus on what he called Trump's incompetence, corruption, and vanity.
The former president called Trump "a loser" and methodically detailed his administration's controversial projects and renovations. Biden highlighted Trump's demolition of the White House East Wing to build a ballroom, the forced removal of Trump's name from the John Kennedy Center after he had it added to the facade, and a failed attempt to renovate the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool that was derailed by an algae bloom despite a $14.7 million investment.
Biden also trained his criticism on Trump's foreign policy, particularly his approach to Russia and NATO. He accused Trump of deliberately distorting and destroying the NATO military alliance and raised concerns about Trump's relationship with Vladimir Putin.
The remarks came as the Democratic Party uses the event to mobilize support for November midterm elections.
Tensions between the US and Iran escalated dramatically over the weekend, threatening to unravel a fragile interim peace agreement between the two countries. Tehran launched drone and missile attacks against Bahrain and Kuwait following new American strikes on southern Iranian sites. Iranian officials warned of a "complete halt" to negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Trump responded with an inflammatory threat on social media, stating: "If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!" He suggested the US might soon abandon diplomatic efforts entirely and instead "militarily finish the job."
Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin issued a directive to migrants holding temporary protected status, saying they should either pursue permanent residency or leave the country. The announcement followed a Supreme Court decision last week that stripped humanitarian protections from hundreds of thousands of immigrants.
A White House office staffed predominantly by veterans of Elon Musk's "department of government efficiency" has quietly redesigned several critical federal government websites, including those for passport applications, voter registration, prescription drug pricing, and children's savings programs. Critics argue the redesigns appear to violate federal law and have raised surveillance concerns.
Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, recently ousted from his position after Trump backed a primary challenger against him in May, accused the president of treating Congress as merely an appendage in his handling of the Iran conflict.
Author James Rodriguez: "Biden's willingness to go after Trump this directly signals the gloves are off heading into the midterms, and the Iran situation is the real wildcard nobody's talking enough about."
