Rockstar Games is locking a chunk of Grand Theft Auto 6 behind its pricier Ultimate Edition, and the move is raising eyebrows across the gaming community. According to details posted on the official Rockstar website, several open-world businesses and at least one story mission will remain inaccessible to players who buy the standard $80 version, forcing them to either upgrade to the $100 Ultimate Edition or miss out entirely.
The closed-off locations include Sara's Unisex Salon, where players can unlock exclusive hairstyles for protagonists Lucia and Jason, the Stock 305 clothing boutique offering "elevated streetwear," and the Electric Fang Tattoo shop featuring designs from real-world artist collective FAILE. For now, Rockstar hasn't clarified exactly how these locations will appear to standard edition players: locked doors, shuttered storefronts, or accessible but non-functional interiors remain unknown.
What makes this strategy unusual is the gameplay content bundled into the higher tier. The exclusive "Gang Compounds" mission task players with infiltrating the PTT Youngin$ illegal goods store in Southside Vice City and escaping with contraband. Rockstar hasn't confirmed whether this mission is central to the main story or positioned as a side activity, but either way, standard edition owners won't get to play it at launch.
The cosmetic exclusives feel familiar enough in modern gaming. Publishers routinely gate skins, emotes, and vanity items behind pre-orders or deluxe editions. But mission content locked to a specific version represents a sharper departure from recent industry norms. The last time Rockstar did something comparable was with GTA 4's DLC episodes, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, which were Xbox exclusives for a year. That was over a decade ago.
How this plays out in GTA Online, the game's persistent multiplayer component launching after the single-player story, could spark real tensions. The current GTA Online thrives on player expression and status signaling, with in-game cosmetics serving as badges of wealth and identity. Exclusive hairstyles and tattoos will inevitably become coveted status symbols, potentially creating a visible divide between those who paid extra and those who didn't. In a competitive, often hostile environment known for griefing, standing out as a "VIP" customer outside Ultimate Edition exclusive shops could invite unwanted attention from other players looking to target high-profile targets.
GTA 6 launches November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Standard Edition retails for $80, Ultimate Edition for $100.
Author Emily Chen: "Locking a story mission behind a paywall feels tone-deaf for a single-player game in 2024, and it'll be interesting to watch how the community reacts once people realize what they're actually missing out on."
