Fortnite is reopening the vault on some of its most exclusive character skins, a reversal of a long-standing policy that once made battle pass purchases feel genuinely scarce. Starting with its next update, cosmetics from Chapter 5 Season 4: Absolute Doom will return to the in-game shop for individual purchase.
The Absolute Doom season, which ran from August through November 2024, was Fortnite's most recent Marvel-focused pass. It featured Doctor Doom, Mysterio, Shuri, War Machine, Gwenpool, Emma Frost, and a Captain America skin modeled after Jonesy. All seven are now expected to hit the store imminently.
Epic Games had long promised never to resell battle pass exclusives, a stance that created genuine urgency around seasonal purchases. The policy worked in the publisher's favor, but it also locked out newer players from characters that had been exclusive for years. As the game approaches its tenth anniversary, Epic changed course in 2024, though it agreed to wait 18 months before reselling any season's content. That window just closed for Absolute Doom.
Epic teased the return via social media, showing vault doors swinging open. The community response has been positive so far, though the shift marks a substantial break from what made battle passes feel like must-buy purchases.
For Epic Games, the economics are straightforward. Individual skins typically cost significantly more than the roughly $10 battle pass itself, so reselling them separately at full price generates fresh revenue from the same characters. Players meanwhile avoid feeling pressure to buy each season's pass out of fear they will never get another chance at the cosmetics.
The timing adds to what is already a packed update window. Fortnite's next patch arrives tomorrow and includes a collaboration with pop singer Olivia Rodrigo plus a crossover with Neopets. Epic Games is then taking its annual two-week summer break afterward.
Author Emily Chen: "This is smart business disguised as player goodwill, and honestly, it works for both sides, but it does drain some of the magic that made battle passes feel genuinely limited."
