Bungie Devs Begged for Destiny Dating Sim. Leadership Said Absolutely Not.

Bungie developers pitched a Destiny dating simulator multiple times over the years, but the studio's leadership consistently rejected the concept. The revelation came from former community member Liana Ruppert, who shared the behind-the-scenes details after spotting a fan expressing interest in such a game.

The dating sim prototype was created during Bungie's "Carnival" event, an annual tradition where developers get a week to build experimental side projects without formal constraints. What started as a one-off prototype evolved into something more ambitious. A small group of developers wanted to turn it into a full-fledged game and pitched it repeatedly to leadership each year.

Robert Brookes, who served as a senior narrative designer at Bungie, confirmed the recurring pitch attempts. He noted that two team members leading the charge came from romance game design backgrounds and even prepared a formal pitch deck complete with budget estimates and performance metrics. The game was reportedly inspired by Dream Daddy, a popular indie dating simulator.

Despite the developers' enthusiasm and preparation, Bungie's leadership remained unmoved. The studio believed the project lacked player interest and worried that romance elements and playful content would distract from Destiny's core identity.

The decision reflects practical concerns beyond creative preference. A dating sim spinoff could have invited criticism from frustrated players who felt resources were being diverted from core Destiny 2 features and improvements. The backlash Marathon has faced offers a cautionary example of how the community scrutinizes Bungie's project decisions.

The prospect of seeing this concept realized has dimmed considerably in recent months. Bungie ended support for Destiny 2 and announced significant layoffs ahead. Destiny 3 is not currently in development, and the timeline for future Destiny projects remains uncertain. While smaller-scale games tied to the franchise might be possible down the line, any dating sim revival appears years away at best.

Author Emily Chen: "It's a shame leadership couldn't take a swing on something genuinely fun when the team was this invested, but the timing and politics around Bungie right now make it a non-starter."
