Sweden faces Tunisia in must-win World Cup showdown

Sweden and Tunisia meet in Group F of the 2026 World Cup with both teams needing a victory after watching the Netherlands and Japan cancel each other out in an earlier match that finished 2-2.

The match kicks off at 8pm local time at Estadio Monterrey, with play beginning at 3am BST, 10pm EDT, and noon AEST.

Neither side arrives in strong form. Sweden's path to the finals came through the playoff route and included a winless drought stretching from June 2025 through March 2026. Even after recent victories over Ukraine and Poland, the Swedes have managed just two wins across their last four matches.

Tunisia's qualification from the CAF group phase proved comfortable, but that comfort has not carried forward. The North Africans have won only one of their past seven games. More concerning is a three-match streak without finding the net, ending with a punishing 5-0 loss to Belgium in their final warm-up fixture.

The Netherlands and Japan's earlier Group F encounter delivered unexpected drama despite preseason skepticism about the tournament format and tired players. Japan equalized in the 88th minute through Daichi Kamada to earn their share of the points, suggesting Group F remains genuinely competitive.

Both Sweden and Tunisia will view this matchup as a critical opportunity to stay alive in what appears to be one of the tougher groups at the tournament. A loss would put either team under immediate pressure heading into their remaining fixtures.

Author James Rodriguez: "Two teams desperately needing a win makes for more compelling World Cup football than the pre-tournament hand-wringing suggested we'd get."
