A pristine copy of the original Super Mario Bros. has shattered the video game collecting record, selling for $3 million at Heritage Auctions this week. The sale tops the previous benchmark of $2 million set in 2021 and nearly doubles what a sealed Super Mario 64 fetched that same year.
What makes this particular cartridge exceptional is its near-perfect condition and its documented history. Graded PSA 9.6 A++, the copy represents the earliest confirmed sealed unit from Super Mario Bros.'s second production run, identifiable by a specific gloss sticker applied in early 1986. The cartridge had remained untouched in its original NES Control Deck bundle for four decades before being discovered just months ago.
The discovery story alone amplifies the collector value. The game emerged from inside a brand-new, unopened console bundle, meaning it escaped the handling and environmental wear that typically degrades cartridges from that era. Heritage Auctions consignment director Evan Masingill called it "the holy grail of video game collecting," noting that the combination of historical significance and preservation creates an unmatched artifact.
Only three sealed copies from this particular production run are known to exist. The other two carry lower grades: one certified VGA 80 and another rated Wata 9.4 A++. The $3 million sale marks the first time any sealed copy from this batch has appeared in public auction, making the achievement even more striking for the collecting community.
The buyer also received the accompanying launch-edition NES Control Deck that originally shipped with the cartridge. While the console itself has collector value, it played a supporting role in this transaction; the real prize was the game inside.
Video game collecting has transformed into a serious market segment over the past several years, with rare cartridges, sealed copies, and authentic hardware commanding six and seven-figure sums from wealthy investors and enthusiasts alike.
Author Emily Chen: "When a 40-year-old cartridge that literally sat in a box untouched for four decades suddenly hits the market and demolishes all previous records, you know you're watching a moment when nostalgia collides with serious money."
