James Harden spent Saturday morning in custody after Houston police discovered a handgun in his vehicle during a traffic stop downtown. The Cleveland Cavaliers guard was arrested on a misdemeanor weapons charge and booked at Harris County Jail before being released on a $100 bond.
Police pulled over Harden's Mercedes just before 4am as he drove through the area with four passengers. An officer spotted the handgun resting in the cup holder, according to court documents. Harden acknowledged ownership of the weapon and was taken into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 22.
The Cavaliers organization has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident. Harden, 36, joined the team in February via trade from the Los Angeles Clippers and helped lead Cleveland to the Eastern Conference finals this season, where he contributed 20.5 points and 7.7 assists across 26 games with the club.
An 11-time All-Star and 2017-18 NBA MVP, Harden is approaching free agency at month's end but is widely expected to remain with the Cavaliers. Over the full 2024-25 season, he averaged 23.6 points and 8.0 assists in 70 games across both teams.
Harden has cycled through six franchises since entering the league as the third overall pick in 2009: the Thunder, Rockets, Nets, 76ers, Clippers, and now Cleveland. Despite sustained excellence that figures to land him in the Hall of Fame, he has never won an NBA championship.
