Grounded 2's Abyss DLC takes players into the dark

Obsidian's survival sandbox Grounded 2 is still finding its footing in early access, but the studio is already planning its next major expansion. At IGN Live, a new DLC called Into the Abyss got its first real showcase, revealing a dramatic shift in tone for the game's second year.

The footage opens with a celebratory montage of Grounded 2's first year, cycling through the oversized flora and fauna that define the experience. The cheerful score underscores the game's core appeal: ordinary insects and plants feel monumental when you're shrunk down to miniature size. One character even reassures players that the giant bugs "it's ok, they're not actually monsters, we're just, well a lot smaller now."

But Into the Abyss signals a tonal pivot. Once the DLC title card appears, the environment darkens considerably. Gone are the sunny vistas of Brookhollow Park. Instead, players encounter shadowy underground spaces where a character in what appears to be a spacesuit moves cautiously forward with a flashlight. That's when a towering mantis-like creature emerges from the gloom, rising menacingly behind the explorer.

The contrast suggests that Obsidian is willing to lean into genuine horror as the game expands. While Grounded 2 has never positioned its creatures as villainous, Into the Abyss seems ready to challenge that framing. The unknown depths might hold threats that blur the line between wildlife and genuine danger.

Grounded 2 remains in early access as the studio continues refining core systems and content. The Abyss DLC launches on August 11, 2026, giving players plenty of time to master the base game before descending into whatever lurks below.

Author Emily Chen: "This is exactly the kind of environmental escalation that keeps survival games fresh, and the shift from 'cozy weird' to genuinely unsettling is a smart move."
