Final Fantasy VII Revelation arrives spring 2027 on all major platforms

Square Enix has officially unveiled the final chapter of its Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, titled Revelation, launching simultaneously across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store in spring 2027.

The announcement came at Summer Game Fest 2026, complete with a debut trailer that positions the game as the climactic showdown between Cloud Strife's party and the god-like Sephiroth. The planet itself hangs in the balance as Meteor, the ultimate destructive magic, threatens total annihilation. The crew commandeers the airship Highwind for their final desperate mission to prevent catastrophe.

Revelation expands the playable roster significantly. Beyond series stalwarts Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, and Cait Sith, two major characters join as fully playable fighters: the gunslinger Vincent Valentine and the crusty pilot Cid Highwind. Both appeared in previous remake entries but now take active combat roles in this conclusion.

The scope of exploration marks a dramatic leap forward. Players traverse an open-world version of the entire planet, utilizing the Highwind to navigate freely. A seamless skydiving mechanic allows parties to leap directly from the airship to ground level, transforming the massive world into a single interconnected playground. Familiar regions return alongside entirely new areas, including Mideel and Wutai, the latter featured prominently in the debut trailer.

Combat undergoes fundamental restructuring through a system called FITS, which reframes character progression around equippable outfits tied to classic Final Fantasy job archetypes. The Warrior outfit emphasizes aggressive offense, while the Black Mage specializes in spell-focused damage. Each outfit unlocks distinct movesets and abilities, allowing players to customize their tactical approach through outfit selection, weapon choice, and materia configuration.

Environmental threats receive equal prominence. Weapons, the monstrous planetary guardians created to defend against Meteor, make their first appearance in the remake trilogy. These colossal beings emerged from the planet itself and destroy indiscriminately, forcing Cloud's party to contend with forces beyond even Sephiroth's control.

Revelation concludes a remake arc that began in 2020 with the original Final Fantasy VII Remake and continued in 2024 with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The trilogy restructures the 1997 classic into a multi-part narrative, with this final installment determining the fate of Cloud, his companions, and the world they've fought to save.

Author Emily Chen: "The FITS system sounds like Square Enix finally cracked the code on making job systems feel organic to the narrative rather than bolted-on mechanics, and having the entire planet as a traversable space could genuinely redefine what open-world Final Fantasy means."
