Wolverine Gets No Collector's Edition, and Insomniac Won't Say Why

Marvel's Wolverine will not ship with a collector's edition, Insomniac Games confirmed after the game's recent PlayStation State of Play showcase. The studio announced that players will have access only to a standard edition and a digital deluxe edition featuring in-game items, ruling out the kind of physical premium packaging that has become expected for major PlayStation first-party releases.

The decision caught fans off guard. Insomniac's own Spider-Man franchise set a high bar, with both the original and sequel shipping with collector's editions that included statues. The Spider-Man 2 version became particularly memorable for its 19-inch Venom statue. Other recent PlayStation blockbusters like Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei both launched with expensive special editions packed with physical collectibles.

Insomniac did not explain its reasoning, leaving players to speculate. On Reddit and gaming forums, the disappointment was immediate. "Probably not a great sign for physical media honestly," one user wrote. Another lamented the missed opportunity: "The Spider-Man 2 Venom statue was so sick. A Wolverine in that vein would have been neat."

Some players pointed to a pattern they've noticed with recent PlayStation collector's editions, which now come with digital codes rather than physical discs. Since not every PS5 includes a disc drive, Sony has shifted away from bundling physical games with premium editions. One commenter suggested this may have backfired, noting that the Black Flag Resynced collector's edition for Assassin's Creed, which does include a physical disc, sold out within minutes.

"[Spider-Man 2's collector's edition] didn't sell well because there was no physical disc in it thus defeating the entire point of getting it," the player reasoned. "That's how you do a collector's edition."

The absence of a collector's edition has led some to worry about what it signals for physical media enthusiasts, though a limited edition PS5 console bundled with the game remains theoretically possible. Console releases of that scale would likely prove costly for Sony in the current market.

Despite the lack of premium packaging, anticipation for the game itself remains strong. Marvel's Wolverine is scheduled for September 15, 2026 on PS5 and will not come to PC as PlayStation continues to deprioritize that platform.

Author Emily Chen: "It's a head-scratcher why Insomniac would leave money on the table when fans clearly want premium editions, especially with a character like Wolverine that practically begs for a killer statue."
