Xbox is shuffling its release calendar, moving the Fable reboot out of this fall and into February 2027 to avoid a crowded holiday window and make room for the arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI.
The decision marks a significant delay for the long-anticipated fantasy RPG, which had been targeting a fall launch across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Microsoft confirmed the move on social media, framing it as a strategic choice to give Fable the spotlight it needs rather than a stumble in development.
"This year is packed with incredible games for Xbox players to enjoy, from Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto VI," Xbox stated in its announcement. "In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we're moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves."
GTA 6's November 19, 2026 release date looms large over the decision. The game industry's biggest juggernauts rarely launch near one another, and Microsoft clearly didn't want Fable buried under Rockstar's juggernaut. Industry insiders had flagged this collision risk in recent weeks, with Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb reporting that Microsoft worried about Fable potentially getting overshadowed.
The delay comes after weeks of speculation about Fable's status. Last month, rumors circulated that the title had been pushed internally, prompting the official Fable social media account to publicly deny the claim and reaffirm the fall window. Now those denials look dated.
Playground Games, the studio developing Fable, has been crafting an ambitious reboot of the beloved British RPG franchise. The team has populated the game world with 1,000 fully voiced NPCs, and players will have the ability to marry any of them. The scope suggests a game that needed more time to reach the finish line.
Microsoft's fall slate remains substantial even without Fable. Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears of War: E-Day are both scheduled for the season, alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which Activision announced will hit October 23. Additional titles like Control Resonant and Star Wars: Galactic Racer round out the publisher's holiday push.
The company is planning a deeper dive into its broader roadmap at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, where Fable will get its next major presentation. Fans may also hear updates on other internally delayed projects like Clockwork Revolution, State of Decay 3, and Hideo Kojima's OD.
Author Emily Chen: "Microsoft is playing it smart here, but it's also a reminder that even the biggest publishers can't compete when the GTA 6 machine is rolling."
