Nintendo is slashing the price of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Switch 2 for the first time, marking a rare discount on one of the company's flagship titles. During Amazon Prime Day, both the original Switch version and the enhanced Switch 2 Edition have dropped $20 from their standard prices, with the Switch 2 Edition now sitting at $59.88.
The discount arrives during the Amazon Prime Day sales event running June 23 through June 26, though the offer is already live and does not require a Prime membership to access. This represents the first substantial official price cut on the game since Black Friday 2024, when it briefly fell to $29.99.
For Switch 2 owners, the enhanced edition delivers meaningful improvements over the original release. The version includes upgraded visuals, a higher and more stable frame rate, faster load times, and HDR support built in. Those who already own Tears of the Kingdom on original Switch hardware can upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition at no cost through the Nintendo Switch Online membership program, bringing the effective price down to $49.94 for subscribers who purchase the physical or digital copy on sale.
Nintendo rarely discounts its major releases, even years after launch, making this promotion unusually significant. The game skipped Black Friday 2024 sales entirely, then appeared absent from major holiday events last year. The timing of this Prime Day discount stands out against the company's typical pricing strategy.
The Switch 2 Edition has earned strong critical reception since launch. IGN's Tom Marks awarded the original game a perfect 10/10, calling it "an unfathomable follow-up to one of the greatest games ever made, somehow improving upon it in nearly every way." When revisiting the title on Switch 2, Marks noted the enhancements make it feel "like this is the way it was always meant to be played."
The discount reflects broader shifts in Nintendo's pricing approach heading into 2026. While the $20 reduction is substantial, it pales against the $50 markdown seen in 2024. Nintendo is also raising Switch 2 console prices by $50 in September, signaling the company may be moving toward less aggressive discounting overall.
Multiple retailers are expected to match Amazon's pricing during the sales period, including Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. Other Switch 2 game preorders at Amazon are also discounted by $10, including titles like Star Fox and the forthcoming Fire Emblem release.
Author Emily Chen: "Nintendo finally blinked on Zelda pricing, but don't expect them to make a habit of it,this deal reads more like a strategic moment than a shift in philosophy."
