GTA 6 'Releases Today' According to Rockstar's Pinned Tweet, Much to Fans' Dismay

Grand Theft Auto VI was supposed to launch today. It didn't. But Rockstar Games' official Twitter account seems to think it did, and the gaming community has noticed the gap between reality and what the company's most visible social post claims.

The disconnect stems from a pinned tweet that Rockstar published on May 6, 2025, promoting GTA 6 Trailer 2. That video carries the May 26, 2026 release date on screen. Here in May 2026, the tweet remains pinned to Rockstar's profile, technically announcing that the game is out today. It is not.

The actual release date is November 19, 2026, as Rockstar confirmed when it delayed the game from its original fall 2025 window on May 2, 2025. CEO Strauss Zelnick of parent company Take-Two recently reaffirmed that November launch in an interview with IGN. Nothing new drops today.

But try telling that to the internet. Fans have spent the past year starving for any scrap of official information, and May 26 became an unofficial memorial to what could have been. The community channeled its frustration into creative posts, jokes, and memes. Some took the gag seriously enough to queue up outside GameStop locations. Others shared fake YouTube front pages imagining what the platform would look like on actual launch day, buried under GTA 6 coverage.

Social media flooded with wry humor. "I'm gonna sue them for emotional damages and false advertising or something," one fan wrote. Another joked, "I'm playing it rn. I'm loving it so far.....(pls Rockstar give us something)." The prevailing sentiment mixed comedy with genuine exhaustion over the wait.

The long silence has fed increasingly wild speculation about what Rockstar might announce next. Fans have theorized about everything from Trailer 3 to pre-order windows, though Rockstar has signaled that GTA 6 marketing efforts don't fully kick off until summer. That means today wasn't supposed to bring anything anyway.

The reality is that the gaming world sits roughly six months out from launch, with the anticipation building to fever pitch. When Rockstar finally does release new information, price details, or fresh screenshots, that pinned Trailer 2 post will presumably come down. Until then, May 26 will live in internet history as the day GTA 6 was technically available according to Rockstar's social media management.

Author Emily Chen: "The most anticipated game ever made shouldn't be advertised through a tweet that gets more confusing every day it stays pinned."
