Governor Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency declaration Saturday as authorities race against time to prevent a catastrophic chemical explosion in Orange County, where 40,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate.
The emergency order mobilizes state resources and agencies to support local responders in Garden Grove, where a storage tank containing approximately 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate has begun leaking gas and shows signs of imminent failure. The highly flammable chemical, used in the production of resins and plastics, is housed at a GKN Aerospace facility.
"The safety of Orange County residents is the top priority," Newsom said in a statement, adding that the state is making public properties available as temporary shelter for evacuees.
Firefighters have attempted to cool the tank by spraying it with water, but those efforts appear ineffective. The tank's temperature has been climbing steadily, rising approximately one degree per hour, according to Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey.
An emergency response team entered the facility overnight to inject a neutralizing agent into a secondary tank nearby in an effort to reduce its explosive potential. When responders checked the temperature gauge, it had reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly 13 degrees higher than the previous day's reading.
Officials are preparing contingency measures including dikes and dams to contain spillage and mitigate health hazards from a potential explosion. Simultaneously, responders are exploring unconventional solutions to prevent the disaster entirely.
"We're bringing people in from all over the country, talking to people all over the place, trying to come up with additional options," Covey said in a video statement. "Letting this thing just fail and blow up is unacceptable to us."
Author James Rodriguez: "This is a raw race against chemistry, and the stakes for 40,000 people depend on whether responders can outthink a rising temperature curve before it reaches the point of no return."
