New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is launching a livestream series called "Talk with the People" on Thursday afternoon, tapping into platforms where millions of younger voters already congregate online.
The show will debut on Twitch, the livestreaming service built by and for video gamers, but will simultaneously broadcast across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other major social networks. Viewers tuning in live on Twitch will be able to ask the mayor questions in real time, turning what amounts to a modern fireside chat into an interactive town hall.
Mamdani's digital gambit reflects a fundamental shift in how elected officials now bypass traditional news gatekeepers. Rather than waiting for broadcast media coverage or cable news bookings, politicians can now speak directly to constituents through the platforms those constituents already use daily. For a mayor whose own rise to City Hall was accelerated by a sharp digital media operation, the move feels both natural and strategic.
"By hosting the country's first recurring cross-platform stream led by an elected official, where New Yorkers can ask questions live on Twitch, we're opening up a new conversation between government and the people it serves, especially younger generations who have too often been ignored," Mamdani said in a statement.
The mayor's office drew an explicit parallel to Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, who used cutting-edge radio technology in the 1940s to reach working New Yorkers directly. LaGuardia's Sunday broadcast "Talk to the People" ran from January 1942 through December 1945. Mamdani's new series borrows that title, recasting it for an era where influencers and political commentators build massive followings on Twitch without ever appearing on cable news.
Twitch, while synonymous with gaming streams, has quietly become a destination for political content. Progressive commentator Hasan Piker has built a significant audience there, signaling that the platform holds real potential for reaching voters outside traditional media channels.
Mamdani teased the debut on X, posting side-by-side images of himself at a modern microphone setup and President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivering one of his legendary radio addresses. The timestamp read: "5.21.26. 4:10PM. Live."
