Drazan Wins GOP Primary, Setting Stage for Rematch with Oregon's Democratic Governor

Christine Drazan has secured the Republican nomination for Oregon governor, clearing a crowded primary field to face incumbent Democrat Tina Kotek in November. Drazan, a state senator, prevailed over 13 rivals in what amounts to a replay of their 2022 contest, when she lost to Kotek by less than four percentage points.

The rematch underscores Oregon's Democratic lean. No Republican has won the governor's office there since 1982, and President Kamala Harris carried the state by 14 points in 2024. Yet Drazan's narrow 2022 defeat suggests she remains competitive in a state where inflation and housing affordability have become flashpoint issues.

Drazan previously led Republicans in the state House before moving to the state Senate. Her campaign has centered on economic relief, particularly lowering living costs and expanding housing options. Those themes resonated enough with primary voters to overcome a fractured field.

Among those she defeated was Chris Dudley, a former NBA player and financial planner who carries name recognition from his 2010 gubernatorial bid, when he lost to Democrat John Kitzhaber by fewer than two points. Dudley's third try at statewide office fell short despite his business credentials and national basketball profile.

Drazan will enter the general election as an underdog in a state that has drifted left over the past four decades. But her near-miss in 2022 suggests the race is winnable if economic anxiety among voters persists and if Kotek's record in office becomes a liability between now and Election Day.

Author Sarah Mitchell: "Drazan's path back to the ballot is narrower than ever, but she's proven she can compete in blue Oregon, and that makes Kotek's re-election far from assured."
