Captain Kirk Chases Historic 62 at PGA Championship

Chris Kirk is on the verge of joining an exclusive club at the US PGA Championship's third round at Aronimink Golf Club. The 41-year-old from Tennessee sank a birdie putt on the 17th hole to reach eight birdies for the day, with just one bogey marring an otherwise pristine scorecard.

A birdie on the 18th would deliver Kirk a 62, tying the lowest round ever recorded in a men's major championship. He currently shares the lead at 4-under par.

The 62 mark is held by four players: Branden Grace posted it during the 2017 Open Championship, while Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele both achieved it at the 2023 US Open. Schauffele added another 62 at last year's PGA Championship, as did Shane Lowry on the same occasion.

Kirk's scorching day comes as several other competitors remain within striking distance. Smalley and McNealy sit at 4-under, one shot back. Lee, Greyserman, Potgieter, Jaeger, Matsuyama, and Gotterup all hold shares of third place at 3-under par.

Rory McIlory is among those at 2-under, along with defending champion Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, and several others still in contention as the third round unfolds.

Author James Rodriguez: "Kirk's assault on a major championship record shows what's still possible when a veteran golfer catches fire on the right day."
