Subnautica 2 Crushes Expectations: 2 Million Copies Sold in 12 Hours

Subnautica 2 has arrived with explosive momentum, moving 2 million copies during its first 12 hours in early access across PC and Xbox platforms. Unknown Worlds announced the milestone as the underwater survival game simultaneously became a streaming and gaming sensation.

The numbers tell the story of a franchise firing on all cylinders. More than 651,000 players jumped into the game simultaneously at peak, with Steam alone seeing 467,000 concurrent users. That nearly nine-fold spike compared to the original Subnautica's all-time peak underscores just how much appetite exists for this sequel.

The foundation for this success was already laid. Subnautica 2 held the top wishlist spot on Steam before launch, benefiting from the series' 18.5 million lifetime sales. The addition of optional four-player co-op built directly into the experience has proven particularly potent, giving players a reason to invite friends and amplifying word-of-mouth growth across streaming platforms.

Getting here was anything but smooth. Development kicked off around 2022, with the game initially targeted for 2025. That shifted dramatically when publisher Krafton removed Unknown Worlds' leadership in July 2025, including CEO Ted Gill. The fired employees alleged that Krafton orchestrated the removal and delayed the game specifically to dodge a reported $250 million bonus tied to hitting development milestones. A judge reinstated Gill and his team earlier this year, setting the project back on course and clearing the path to this week's launch.

A last-minute leak days before release threatened to derail momentum, but players showed up anyway. The game has launched in early access with a substantial narrative campaign, cooperative multiplayer, and an extensive underwater world to explore. Unknown Worlds plans to continue adding content over time as the game develops toward a full release.

Reviews have been measured. IGN's early access assessment scored the game a 7/10, praising the core experience while suggesting some players might prefer waiting for additional polish and content drops before diving in.

Author Emily Chen: "This launch proves that good IP and genuine fan demand can survive almost anything, even corporate chaos and last-minute leaks."
