Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Finally Shows the Blood, Borrows Key Mechanic From Shadows

Ubisoft lifted the curtain on Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's core gameplay systems this week, and the studio made a point of showcasing something fans had been asking about since the initial reveal: visceral combat with blood effects fully enabled.

The fresh deep dive reveals Edward Kenway stabbing, slicing, and skewering enemies with gushes of red that were conspicuously absent from last month's footage. While Ubisoft never explained the original omission, the new breakdown confirms that the remake's combat will deliver the brutal edge players expect from a pirate-era Assassin's Creed game.

Beyond the gore, the blog post details several tweaks and new features shaping how Black Flag Resynced plays. The most significant addition is the Observe mechanic, a system pulled directly from last year's Assassin's Creed Shadows. The feature lets players quickly tag enemies they've highlighted using Eagle Vision, streamlining reconnaissance and giving players more reason to scan their environment before striking.

The move marks a departure from how recent Assassin's Creed games handled similar functions. In the RPG-style entries that preceded Black Flag Resynced, an eagle drone served the same tagging role. Ubisoft has made clear that Black Flag Resynced is not an RPG and will not include such a companion, making the Observe system a practical solution inherited from the feudal Japanese setting of Shadows.

Parkour and stealth also received refinements. Players now get a brief speed boost when mantling after a wall run, and rolling after landing maintains sprinting momentum. Manual crouch controls return for stealthier approaches, while the ability to raise and lower Edward's hood adds both mechanical and cosmetic value.

Traversal has been overhauled with ziplines for smoother movement across environments. On the social stealth front, Edward can now blend into groups of three or more civilians, and the classic coin-throwing distraction mechanic makes a comeback, costing 10 Reales per use. Hiring dancers as a cover option also returns.

The remake arrives July 9 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Ubisoft is offering a Collector's Edition priced at $200, which includes a statue of Edward Kenway that reportedly went viral on resale sites earlier this year. After years of speculation fueled by leaks, the much-anticipated return to the Caribbean is finally within reach.

Author Emily Chen: "Borrowing Observe from Shadows makes sense mechanically, but Black Flag Resynced is winning back skeptics by proving it's willing to keep what made the original special, blood and all."
