A 55-year-old gamer's emotional connection to Capcom's upcoming sci-fi action title Pragmata has captivated the game's community, with his Reddit post now ranking among the subreddit's all-time most-upvoted submissions.
TheRealDuke777 shared photos comparing Pragmata's android companion Diana to his daughter McKenzie Erin, who passed away at age 8 in 2009 after a battle with severe heart conditions. McKenzie suffered from seizures and atrial tachycardia beginning at just 11 months old, eventually developing into Super Ventricular Tachycardia, a condition that causes abnormally rapid heartbeats. One afternoon while playing outside, she collapsed, seized, and was airlifted to a children's hospital. She was pronounced with no brain activity six days later.
"She's forever eight," TheRealDuke777 wrote in his post.
The gamer had largely abandoned video games after college but reignited his passion three decades later in February 2024, thanks to his 9-year-old daughter Ella. What started with Fortnite expanded into other titles like Hogwarts Legacy and Red Dead Redemption, experiences he credits with helping him navigate life's challenges. When he watched Pragmata footage with Ella, she immediately noticed the resemblance between Diana and McKenzie's photos.
"When I watched some videos of PRAGMATA, Ella said, 'Daddy, she reminds me of pictures of McKenzie. I wonder if Diana is like McKenzie?'" he recounted. "So I purchased the whole bundle and we started playing it."
Diana serves as a hacking-capable android sidekick who accompanies the protagonist throughout Pragmata's story. But for TheRealDuke777, the character's appeal runs far deeper than visual similarity. After playing through roughly 30 percent of the campaign, he discovered that Diana embodies traits reminiscent of both his daughters, transforming the experience into something deeply therapeutic.
"Diana is very much like both my daughters," he said. "Maybe I got a little bit teary eyed. Maybe... I absolutely love this game and the time Ella spends with me. PRAGMATA is Therapeutic for my soul."
The post sparked an outpouring from the gaming community. Hundreds of replies flooded in with condolences, while others shared their own stories of loss and remembrance. The emotional resonance was so strong that game director Cho Yong-hee acknowledged the post after it circulated on X/Twitter.
Pragmata launches April 17, 2026 on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Author Emily Chen: "Gaming's power to heal and connect us across loss is something the industry still underestimates, and this story proves why that matters."
