Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is shaping up as a faithful restoration of the 2013 original, with developers confirming a slate of returning activities alongside several new conveniences for the remake's July launch.
In a Reddit AMA, creative director Paul Fu and game director Richard Knight detailed what players can expect when the pirate adventure sets sail. Whale and shark hunting, bell diving, bar games, and the notorious Legendary Ships are all making the cut. The Legendary Ships, Knight noted, remain "as brutal as ever to fight," with a dedicated naval deep dive planned for May to reveal more about these elite encounters.
One of the more useful additions is a Pathfinder autopilot for the Jackdaw, Edward Kenway's ship. The feature mirrors a similar ability already present in the series for horseback travel, letting players set a waypoint and let the vessel sail itself. There's a catch: "Edward's hands must stay at the wheel," Knight said, meaning you cannot wander the deck during automated sailing. "You never know when an attack is coming."
The Kenway's Fleet mobile minigame from the original is fully integrated into the remake without requiring a separate phone app. Players can access it from either the Hideout or the Captain's Cabin. Online events tied to rare encounters, such as white whale spawns, have been reimagined as built-in game features rather than time-limited server events. The game will feature Anomalies, a new online content system previously seen in Assassin's Creed Shadows.
Combat has been redesigned around dual swords as Edward's primary weapons. The Hidden Blade, iconic to the Assassin series, is no longer a selectable tool but instead triggers as a contextual, finishing move when you break an opponent's defense. Fu described the takedown as "fatal" and "BLOODY," positioning it as critical to moment-to-moment fighting rather than a situational option as in the original.
The Wanted System returns intact, meaning Pirate Hunters will pursue Edward if his bounty climbs too high. Social stealth mechanics, remappable controls, and all original character costumes are confirmed features. The classic feel of the 2013 game is clearly the priority here.
Black Flag Resynced launches July 9 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. A $200 Collector's Edition includes an Edward Kenway statue and is available for preorder.
Author Emily Chen: "This is a remake that seems determined to preserve what made the original work while smoothing out the friction points, and that autopilot feature is the kind of quality-of-life improvement that can make or break a 50-hour adventure."
