Final Fantasy 14 Heads to Switch 2 at 30fps with Mouse Support

Final Fantasy XIV is officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August, and director Naoki Yoshida has now spelled out how it will actually play on the hybrid console. During a roundtable at Fan Fest 2026, he confirmed the port will support mouse and keyboard controls and target 30 frames per second, while also running on a separate subscription model from other versions of the game.

The 30fps target applies across gameplay, though Yoshida acknowledged towns may dip below that threshold due to the sheer number of player characters rendered on screen simultaneously. He emphasized the team is prioritizing stability over raw performance, saying framerate "is something you don't have to be concerned about" when it comes to the overall experience.

Mouse controls will be available through the Switch 2's built-in capabilities, giving players flexibility in how they approach content. Yoshida revealed the QA team has been stress-testing this setup in preparation for launch. When asked if he'd personally tackled high-end Savage raid content using the Joy-Con mouse feature, he laughed it off, noting he prefers a controller for his own playtime. Still, he painted a clear picture of how different player types might use the hardware. Hardcore raiders could dock the console to a TV and plug in a full mouse-keyboard setup for serious content, while casual gatherers and crafters could roam with the system in handheld mode.

That flexibility ties directly into broader changes coming with the Evercold expansion and Patch 8.0, which will shift Final Fantasy XIV away from demanding daily login cycles and toward a weekly rhythm instead. Yoshida framed this as an opportunity for players to customize their playstyle without feeling pressured to log in constantly. The Switch 2 version fits naturally into this philosophy, he said, allowing people to choose when and where they engage.

Players jumping to Switch 2 will need to pay for a separate Final Fantasy XIV subscription beyond any Nintendo Switch Online membership. However, existing subscribers on other platforms receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 fee. The free trial remains available through Shadowbringers, the third expansion, with standard restrictions in place.

Yoshida was transparent about the performance gap between Switch 2 and "more robust systems," acknowledging he'd seen skepticism online about how a portable device would handle an MMO of this scale. He stressed the team is working hard on optimization for the platform and believes players will find the experience serviceable for both casual and competitive play depending on their setup choice.

Author Emily Chen: "30fps is a compromise, but if the stability holds and the port doesn't tank raid DPS rotations, Yoshida might pull off one of the more ambitious MMO ports ever attempted."
