Spiders, the French video game developer behind the GreedFall franchise, has announced it will cease operations immediately following its parent company Nacon's failed attempt to find a buyer.
The studio confirmed its liquidation through a statement posted to X, revealing that efforts to save the company after Nacon filed for insolvency came up empty. "After a long period without clear answers, we have received confirmation that Spiders is being liquidated," the studio wrote. "This means the company as a whole no longer exists. We'll cease our functions immediately."
Spiders was founded in 2008 and carved out a reputation in the mid-budget gaming space. The studio initially gained traction by porting titles to Xbox 360 before transitioning to developing its own original content in the 2010s. The GreedFall RPG series became its signature work, with the original title selling over 2 million copies within three years of launch.
The timing of the closure is particularly jarring for the studio. GreedFall: The Dying World, the sequel to the franchise, entered early access in 2024 and launched its full release just last month. Within weeks of that milestone, the shutdown announcement followed. The closure also represents another casualty in what has become a brutal stretch for game development, with major publishers and smaller independent studios alike implementing sweeping layoffs and shuttering operations.
According to Spiders' statement, the planned DLC for GreedFall: The Dying World will still release, but Nacon will handle publication going forward. The studio urged players experiencing issues with their games to contact Nacon directly, as Spiders will no longer be in a position to provide support.
The fate of Spiders' intellectual property remains unclear. The studio does not appear to own any major franchises beyond GreedFall, and given the sequel's mixed critical and fan reception, it seems unlikely Nacon will pursue further development of the series or attempt to leverage other studio assets.
The closure marks the end of a company that spent over 15 years operating in a challenging corner of the industry, where mid-budget ambitions often struggle against the marketing power and resources of larger publishers. Spiders proved it could craft compelling experiences with GreedFall's initial success, but an unstable parent company and market pressures ultimately proved insurmountable.
Author Emily Chen: "Another mid-tier studio gone, and another franchise's future in limbo. The GreedFall series deserved better odds than whatever hand Nacon was dealt."
