A Chapel Hill, North Carolina man was taken into custody Wednesday night at a Destin, Florida hotel after federal authorities identified him as a suspect in a planned mass shooting targeting a major New Orleans festival, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies recovered a handgun and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition from the suspect's hotel room. The arrest came without incident when the sheriff's office was alerted by federal authorities that the man was in their jurisdiction while allegedly en route to commit violence at a large Louisiana festival.
The suspect, identified as Christopher Gillum, is wanted by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety on terroristic threats charges. Gillum previously worked as a police officer in Chapel Hill from 2004 to 2019. He is being held as a fugitive from justice pending extradition to Louisiana to face charges there.
While the specific festival was not named in the arrest report, New Orleans is currently hosting its annual jazz and heritage celebration, which runs through early May and draws roughly 460,000 visitors annually to celebrate the region's music, food, and culture.
Louisiana State Police Trooper Danny Berrincha confirmed that his agency is investigating the case alongside the FBI but noted that no direct threats to Louisiana festivals have been identified at this time.
New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno praised the coordinated effort, saying law enforcement agencies across multiple states from North Carolina to Florida worked together to prevent potential violence.
Author James Rodriguez: "Multi-state coordination prevented what could have been a tragedy, but the fact that a former cop accumulated ammunition and a weapon while allegedly plotting mass violence raises hard questions about screening and detection in domestic threat cases."
