The US military intercepted and seized an Iranian-flagged container ship attempting to breach a naval blockade near the strait of Hormuz, marking the first such seizure since American forces began blocking Iranian ports last week.
Tehran's joint military command immediately condemned the action as piracy and signaled retaliation was coming. The seizure appeared to shatter what little remained of a ceasefire agreement that has held since April 8.
The timing could not have been worse for diplomacy. The US had scheduled negotiations with Iran for Monday in Pakistan, but Iran's state media reported Sunday evening that Tehran has no intention of attending those talks. The ceasefire itself expires Wednesday.
The political fallout extends beyond the region. An NBC poll released Sunday showed 67 to 68 percent of American adults disapprove of how the Trump administration is handling the Iran conflict, along with inflation and the cost of living.
