Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has rocketed past 12 million players, a milestone that has left its publisher stunned. Focus Entertainment credited the third-person action game with exceeding expectations that seemed already optimistic just a couple of years ago.
The player surge stems partly from the game's recent arrival on subscription services, which expanded its reach beyond traditional purchases. While sales figures remain undisclosed, the sheer player count underscores genuine commercial momentum for the Saber Interactive title.
The success is remarkable enough that a sequel is already in active development. Yet Saber is not abandoning the original. Tim Willits, the studio's development chief, pushed back against the notion that Space Marine 2 has become a secondary concern now that Space Marine 3 is underway.
Willits pointed to the recent Techmarine update as evidence of sustained commitment. The game ranked at number four on top sales charts following that release, signaling the playerbase remains engaged and spending. He drew a parallel to the studio's handling of World War Z, another title that continues to receive content support even as new projects move forward in parallel.
The balancing act reflects a studio confident enough in its pipeline to nurture two major properties simultaneously. For players, it means Space Marine 2 is not being put on life support just because a successor is coming.
Author Emily Chen: "This is what happens when you actually deliver on a licensed game: players stick around, and the publisher makes a sequel before the original has cooled off."
