20th Century Studios is moving forward with a feature film based on 99 Nights in the Forest, the breakout Roblox horror game that has already accumulated 26 billion lifetime visits despite launching roughly a year ago.
The title ranks as the seventh most-played game ever on the platform. Its premise draws inspiration from the survival-horror formula: players must endure 99 nights trapped in a haunted forest while battling creatures and rescuing four lost children. The game has peaked at 14.2 million concurrent players.
The adaptation marks 20th Century Studios' first major plunge into video game properties since Disney's acquisition in 2019. The game's three developers,Alex Kieft, Cameron Angland, and Matthew Hufton, will serve as executive producers on the film, though no directors, writers, or other creatives have been attached yet.
Kieft, Angland, and Hufton released a statement expressing their enthusiasm about the pairing. "Growing up, Disney and 20th films were a huge part of our childhood, so collaborating with such legendary and enduring studios feels surreal," they said. "We're excited to explore the world of 99 Nights in the Forest on a broader stage and to create some scares in an entirely new medium."
The move reflects a broader trend in Hollywood toward mining gaming's massive player bases for film and television content. Game adaptations have become increasingly attractive to studios seeking proven audiences and built-in brand recognition.
Author Emily Chen: "A horror game hitting these numbers deserves a theatrical shot, but the real test is whether 20th can translate Roblox's chaotic energy into something that actually scares adults."
