Magic: The Gathering is heading back to Middle-earth. Following the massive success of its Lord of the Rings crossover in 2023, Wizards of the Coast is launching a new set centered on The Hobbit, complete with dwarves, dragons, and creatures that tap into the fantasy universe's rich lore.
Three uncommon cards from the upcoming set reveal how the design team is balancing competitive playability with the set's Limited format focus. Nasty Little Rabbit serves as a straightforward payoff for green-aligned draft strategies, entering the battlefield early and growing larger as games progress to maintain relevance. Fearsome Goblin Pair aligns with the red-black goblin theme running through the set and incorporates the "amass" mechanic, which builds an ever-expanding goblin army over time.
The standout card of the three is Thror's Map, a colorless legendary artifact that finds you a basic land and then can be activated each turn to draw and discard a card. The effect, known in Magic circles as "looting," fits the flavor of a treasure map perfectly. While not the most powerful version of this mechanic ever printed, the card has enough going for it that it could see play in multiple Commander decks, Magic's most popular casual format.
The Hobbit set arrives as Wizards of the Coast continues an aggressive strategy of licensing major intellectual properties through its "Universes Beyond" crossover initiative. Recent releases include sets based on Marvel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. A Star Trek set is scheduled for later this year, and one-off crossovers like God of War have appeared through the Secret Lair digital store.
The timing is significant. The Lord of the Rings set proved to be a commercial and critical hit, generating enormous enthusiasm among both longtime players and new audiences. However, that set also faced an artistic controversy when a reprint of the iconic One Ring card was discovered to have potentially plagiarized elements of its design.
The Hobbit set launches in paper form on August 14, with digital versions arriving on MTG Arena and MTGO on August 11. Prerelease events kick off at local game stores on August 7, giving players a chance to experience the set early.
