Sparkling Water Won't Wreck Your Teeth Like Soda Does, Study Shows

If you've been reaching for sparkling water as a healthier swap from soda, new research offers reassuring news for your dental health. Preliminary findings presented at a major nutrition conference suggest that unsweetened sparkling water poses significantly less risk to tooth enamel than sugary soda, though it does cause a temporary dip in mouth acidity.

Researchers at Purdue University tested how four different beverages affected oral pH levels in 20 adults: sugar-sweetened soda, regular sparkling water, calcium-fortified sparkling water, and plain water. By measuring changes in salivary pH immediately after consumption, the team aimed to understand how these drinks actually impact the mouth in real time rather than relying solely on laboratory measurements of beverage acidity.

The results were clear. Soda produced the most dramatic acidification, with mouth pH dropping significantly within two minutes of consumption and remaining depressed even 20 minutes later. Both types of sparkling water caused temporary pH drops, but the effect was milder and short-lived. Regular unsweetened sparkling water's pH dip occurred at the two-minute mark, while calcium-fortified versions showed the decline after five minutes. By the 20-minute mark, both had returned to near-baseline levels.

Tooth enamel begins to dissolve when mouth pH falls below 5.5. Crucially, the study found that saliva helped restore normal acidity after participants consumed either soda or sparkling water, keeping pH above the erosion threshold even in these short-term measurements.

Wajiha Zulfiqar, the Purdue graduate student who led the work, emphasized the practical takeaway: unsweetened sparkling water emerges as a lower-risk option when consumed in moderation alongside good oral hygiene. She noted that replacing soda with sparkling water could reduce enamel erosion risk, while also suggesting the beverage industry might explore reformulation strategies to lower the erosive potential of acidic drinks overall.

The research team acknowledged important limitations. The study measured only brief pH changes in controlled conditions. In real life, dental erosion depends on consumption frequency, how long teeth remain exposed to acidic beverages, and whether the drink contains sugar. These variables can compound over time in ways the short-term experiment couldn't capture.

Researchers plan to examine long-term effects of sparkling water consumption on oral health in future studies, including whether it influences other factors contributing to teeth and gum health. The findings, presented at the American Society for Nutrition's annual meeting in July, remain preliminary pending peer review and publication in a scientific journal.
