Firefighters entered a smoke-filled home in Grand Haven Township on Friday morning and discovered eight members of a single family dead inside, including six children ranging in age from five to 15 years old. At least some of the bodies bore gunshot wounds.
Emergency crews from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and the Grand Haven Fire Department responded to a residence on Riverside Trail shortly before noon after receiving reports of smoke and fire. Once firefighters began battling the blaze, they found the bodies.
"Units made entry inside to battle the fire because there was smoke showing from the residence. When they got inside, they noticed that there were several people deceased inside the home," Captain Jacob Sparks of the fire department said at a press conference. "Some of the victims did have gunshot wounds to their bodies."
The dead consisted of two adults and six children. Authorities have not released the victims' identities.
Investigators are treating the incident as an active case. The Michigan State Police arson team has joined the investigation to determine the fire's cause and point of origin, though officials believe the flames started inside the residence. Autopsies on all eight victims are scheduled for completion over the weekend.
Sheriff's officials said they are not currently seeking suspects from outside the household. "I don't want to jump to any conclusions at this point," Sparks said, emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing.
The township sits roughly 20 miles south of Muskegon in western Michigan. Authorities said more details are expected once the medical examiner's office completes its work.
