Recent conflicts in Ukraine and Iran are forcing a fundamental reckoning with how the world defends its energy infrastructure. Cheap, remotely piloted aircraft have become potent weapons against refineries, pipelines, and shipping lanes, threatening supplies and prices in ways that reverberate across the global economy.
Ukraine has demonstrated the reach of drone strikes, targeting Russian refineries and crude infrastructure around the Black Sea from hundreds of miles away. Iran has used unmanned systems to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and struck Qatar's liquefied natural gas export facility, demonstrating how localized conflicts can trigger worldwide economic disruption when critical energy nodes fall offline.
The impact shows up at the pump. Oil traded at $100 per barrel this week, with gasoline and diesel prices elevated partly because drone attacks have made energy supplies less reliable. Gregory Brew, an analyst with the Eurasia Group, frames the new reality bluntly: "Anyone building energy infrastructure in any area where kinetic conflict is even remotely possible is going to have to think about drone defense."
The shift demands a complete rethinking of how power grids and fuel networks are designed. For decades, energy infrastructure was built around concentration and economies of scale. Large centralized power plants and refineries became targets. Smaller, distributed systems offer protection but come with higher per-unit costs.
Tatiana Mitrova, a fellow at Columbia's Center on Global Energy Policy, notes that Ukraine's response to Russian grid attacks points toward the future. Ukrainian forces have increasingly moved to mobile, localized power generation rather than relying on fixed central stations. This trend favors what she calls "modular" infrastructure: smaller scale facilities that are faster and cheaper to build, and easier to relocate if threatened.
Defending existing infrastructure poses a separate problem. Missile interceptor systems are expensive and cannot realistically protect every critical facility. Anti-drone tools exist, including netting, lasers, electronic jamming, and air defense missiles, but each works better against certain targets. Pipelines and other fixed infrastructure present particular challenges because their locations are often public knowledge.
Military analysts argue that the energy sector and U.S. defense planners must treat this threat with greater urgency. The Modern War Institute at West Point recommends decentralizing critical systems in high-risk regions, hardening major assets that cannot be dispersed with blast walls and protective barriers, and strengthening coordination between military and energy industry leadership. The current approach, they argue, still treats energy security as a secondary concern rather than a strategic priority equal to other critical infrastructure.
