Two American service members were killed Saturday when Iranian ballistic missiles struck a U.S. airbase in Jordan, marking the first combat fatalities among American forces since fighting escalated two weeks prior.
The attack targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, a facility housing U.S. troops and fighter jets near the Syrian border. At least two Iranian ballistic missiles made direct impact, triggering explosions visible in video footage shared across social media platforms that captured the immediate aftermath and billowing smoke.
U.S. Central Command confirmed the deaths in a post to X on Saturday, stating that the two service members "were killed in action as U.S. Central Command and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks." The command added that one additional service member remains missing in action.
Four American service members were airlifted to Jordanian hospitals following the strike. All four were subsequently discharged after treatment. Personnel who sustained minor injuries and underwent evaluation returned to their regular duties, the military said.
The death toll brings the total number of U.S. service members killed across the broader conflict to 16. The incident represents a significant escalation in a region already tense from months of proxy clashes and direct military engagement.
