Game of Thrones RTS Delayed to 2027 as PlaySide Demands More Time

PlaySide Studios has pushed the release of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros into early 2027, moving the real-time strategy game back by a full year from its original 2026 target.

In a development blog post, the studio cited the need for additional time to meet quality standards across both the RTS genre and the expectations of Game of Thrones fans. "The extra breathing room gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for," PlaySide wrote, adding that the team remains committed to delivering an experience worthy of the HBO universe.

The studio revealed fresh details about campaign scope, confirming that players will visit iconic locations across the Seven Kingdoms including King's Landing, The Wall, and Ashemark. Robb Stark's storyline will lead through the Battle of the Five Armies, one of the saga's most pivotal military conflicts.

PlaySide is not alone in stepping back its timeline. Danganronpa 2x2, Lords of the Fallen 2, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis have all shifted launches to early 2027, a pattern driven partly by the crowded holiday slate and the anticipated November 2026 arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6, which industry observers expect to dominate conversation and sales.

For fans of the Game of Thrones franchise, the delay represents another chapter in a lengthy wait since the HBO series concluded in 2019. The game had already been in development for years before its initial 2026 window was announced, so the fresh postponement extends what has become a patient period for players hoping to command armies in Westeros.

Author Emily Chen: "A 2027 launch makes smart business sense given GTA 6's November 2026 bombshell, but PlaySide will need to prove that the extra year translates to a genuinely deep RTS experience and not just another licensed property coasting on IP recognition."
