A Los Angeles television reporter became the internet's latest viral sensation after she managed to deliver an entire news segment without flinching while a massive flying cockroach crawled across her neck, shoulders, and microphone during a live shot Wednesday evening.
Rachel Menitoff, a KTLA News correspondent, was reporting on dangerous heat conditions from Sherman Oaks when the unwelcome visitor made its dramatic entrance. Video of the incident shows the large insect landing directly on her body before traversing toward her microphone and eventually taking flight again. Throughout the ordeal, Menitoff never broke stride, completing her report as if nothing unusual was happening.
The moment she came off the air told a different story. The footage reveals her quickly brushing her shoulders and shaking visibly as she searched for the bug, while someone off camera laughed and asked how she had managed not to react on camera. Menitoff later acknowledged the difficulty in her Instagram story response to viewers: "Trust me, it was NOT easy to keep my cool."
The station's social media team praised her composure, with KTLA posting the clip on X with the caption: "SURPRISE LANDING. An insect crashed KTLA reporter Rachel Menitoff's live shot last night, and we must praise her professionalism. Who else could remain this cool!?" Anchor Eric Spillman called the experience "terrifying," while viewers flooded the comments with admiration for her nerve.
"How she didn't freak out despite being in camera is beyond me," one viewer wrote. Another joked: "The way I would scream and cuss and yell and throw up and start a fire and run away hysterically crying.... Kudos to this woman." A fellow reporter simply suggested: "Give this woman a promotion."
Menitoff's unflappable performance joins a long tradition of animals interrupting live broadcasts. In 2020, CNN correspondent Joe Johns faced off with a raccoon on the White House lawn moments before air time. A Moscow weather reporter's segment was hijacked by a dog who absconded with her microphone in 2021. A baby elephant stole the show during an environmental report in Kenya in late 2022, and in 2019, a large sow made an uninvited appearance during a live interview in Greece.
Unlike those incidents, which drew sympathy or amusement, Menitoff's uninvited passenger was decidedly less adorable. The flying cockroach left little room for the usual charm that comes with animal interruptions, making her unflinching delivery all the more remarkable to viewers watching online.
Author James Rodriguez: "Menitoff earned her stripes on live TV, and that's exactly the kind of unshakeable professional presence that separates the good reporters from the great ones."
